From here on I'm inserting pictures both of myself and of those I hold dear to me, including those reporters who have impacted my career and philosophy of news gathering. Note that some pics could reflect my decidedly odd sense of humor!
Enjoy!

An Old-fashioned Reporter | Home
Background
Most of my early years in journalism were centered in broadcast news. From 1972 through 1977 my efforts were pretty much exclusively in radio and television news.
In the late 1970s I began dabbling in print journalism, at a small Central Massachusetts weekly, and then as a correspondent for The Middlesex News, an up-and-coming daily published in Framingham, Mass.
From 1977 through the late 1980s I worked at several radio stations, both as a news director and journalist, as well as in other on-air and management capacities. After working at length as an investigative reporter, in part for Worcester Magazine, an alternative weekly covering New England's second largest city, I decided to focus on print reporting.
Essentially I came to feel that broadcast journalism was, by nature, little more than fast-food journalism. Due to the time limitations inherent in broadcast news it was virtually impossible to adequately cover a story, with sensationalism a natural byproduct.
In brief, an overview of my print journalism career follows:
Print Reporting
The Griffin Daily News, Griffin, GA, 2001-2002.
Assistant Sports Editor at a progressive, innovative and aggressive daily 40 miles south of Atlanta. Edited and paginated sports section utilizing Baseview Newsedit Pro and Quark Xpress. Responsible for coverage of primary high school sports consisting of five high schools from four school districts, as well as periodic coverage of the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Thrashers, the Atlanta Hawks and the University of Georgia, and wrote regular sports column.
"Suffer the Little Children," 1999-2002.
A nonfiction book-in-progress detailing how politics, misconduct, malfeasance, corruption and empire building consigned children to death in Florida at the hands of the state agency charged with protecting them.
Treasure Coast Newspapers, Stuart, FL, 2000.
Employed at three Scripps Howard dailies on Florida's Treasure Coast, the Stuart News, the Port St. Lucie News and the Fort Pierce Tribune, with a combined daily circulation of roughly 100,000. Initial beat assignment was Martin County government, and later courts and criminal justice. Stories with regional or statewide impact were regularly published in the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, and our sister daily, the Vero Beach Press Journal.
The Daily Commercial, Leesburg, FL, 1998-2000.
Government and political reporter covering city and county governments for seven-day-per week daily with winter circulation of 45,000. Emphasis on enterprise and investigative reporting, and extensive crime, courts, religion and entertainment reporting. Also used extensively as staff photographer.
The Daily Sun, Lake County, FL, 1998.
Political reporter covering city, county and state governments for 15,000 circulation daily. Extensive use of computer-assisted reporting. Regular contributor to religion and entertainment sections. Also regularly used as photographer.
The Xenia Daily Gazette, Xenia, OH, 1997-98.
Political reporter covering city and county governments for daily with circulation of 10,500, stressing breaking new ground and story development, often employing computer-assisted journalism. Regularly functioned as photographer.
The Chronicle, Willimantic, CT, 1987-88.
Averaged three stories per day as staff reporter with six-day per week afternoon daily, circulation 13,000, leading paper approximately 50% of the time. Responsible for coverage of municipal, state, national government and politics, with emphasis on in-depth pieces and enterprise reporting.
The Times, Webster, MA, 1985-87.
Staff reporter covering all facets of news, emphasizing crime and municipal government for weekly with 7,500 circulation, averaging 12 stories per week, leading paper about 75% of the time. Ability to develop enterprise pieces resulted in repeatedly beating monolithic competing dailies on critical stories. Simultaneously corresponded for our afternoon sister daily, The News of Southbridge, MA.
